2021.09.25 14:05 pretzelking96 Too much lore dumping?
So I've been working on my story (read: doing everything except actually writing it lol) and I'm worried about heavy lore dumps OR plunging the reader into the midst of things and giving 0 context. For example let's say this is page 1 of Book 1 of a story (I made this up and exaggerated a bit to get the point across, I promise this isn't the story I'm actually working on, haha). As a reader I hate picking a book up seeing it start this way:
Glendofion was furious. Roblagius had been gone nearly a month on his errand to Do'mo'kodor Castle and hadn't sent word of his status for nearly a week. This should have been a simple job for a Krovost, the elite knights of the Mulbadian Empire, and his tardiness was unbecoming of someone with such a noble pedigree.
"Maybe we were wrong to trust Roblagius?" Glendofion muttered to himself. Vodion seemed to hear him from his desk despite seeming distracted by his many U'mlothe crystals and his potions.
"Roblagius is my kin. If you cannot trust him, then you have certainly made many miscalculations lately. Or have you forgotten about the incident with the Sword of Hymiterroh and the Brotoddor already?" Vodion asked with a sardonic smile.
He was right of course, and Glendofion knew it. "You Postos are all the same. Before the second great mecha-mage war nobody in their right mind would have trusted a Posto -"
"-and yet here we are!" Vodion replied, chuckling to himself before taking another swig from his Elasmus potion. The great silver bottle had been nearly drained in the course of only an hour and Glendofion knew that soon Vodion's grisly transformation would be complete.
Glendofion always dreaded being near Vodion during his metamorphosis but as a vassal to Ioyodon he knew he had no choice. He brushed the rapidly emerging beads of sweat from his forehead and exhaled heavily, clutching tightly the relic Ev'ia gave him so long ago on the Plains of Min.
"Vodion, this time do not relinquish full control to We'ret'omastov. Hang on to your wits! We cannot risk another encounter with Lord Docii..."
"You mean you cannot risk another encounter with Lord Docii? No harm will come to me, I should think! But his axe of X'entogrigan steel certainly looks thirsty for the blood of weaklings" and immediately following those words, Vodion slurped down the last of the Elasmus potion and bowed solemnly to the small figure of Tigicidon in the nave above his desk.
LOL it's like....WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THIS CRAZY STORY?!?! lmao I read stuff like this and I get about 10 pages in before I go "I'm out" because there's 0 context, 0 grounding the reader, 0 reason to care. It's like the author is basically saying "hey let me show you how cool my story is because I have all these names and things that are supposed to seem like depth but they're really just...well...er, names and things. But there's a story here I swear! Keep reading the next 250 pages and I promise you'll be SO hooked!"
Now I know this can be pulled off but it just never clicks with me. For example I had to bail on Dune because it was too much like the example above for me but obviously I know it's considered a classic but I just can't do stories like that. It's an instant "no" from me as a reader.
So although I'm realizing it may be my biggest pet peeve as a reader, at the same time as a writer I'm realizing I spend maybe too much time giving context and backstory that explains the history of my world when in reality readers maybe pick up more than I give them credit for? I'm realizing that although I strongly dislike the example above I also don't know how to gently guide the reader into the world and make sure they're picking up all the relevant tidbits without just lore dump after lore dump. So is there a balanced approach to this? Have any of you gone through something similar in your writing and how did you overcome communicating tons of history, mythology, etc. to the reader? I feel like I have a cool world but I'm paranoid I won't be able to demonstrate its full grandeur to my readers...anybody in the same boat?

2021.09.25 14:05 ExistentialOcto TIL there are *two* friends/rivals called Nyryx
In my first game, one of the players was a whisper who chose "Nyryx, a possessor-ghost" as their friend. All well and good.
In my second game, one of the player was a slide who chose "Nyryx, a prostitute" as their friend.
I am very confused because this implies that either Nyryx is both a ghost and a prostitute OR that there are two people called Nyryx in the city of Doskvol. My instinct is to somehow make both characters the same person, but I don't know how to do that in a way that makes sense. Maybe the Nyryx that the slide knows is actually someone that Nyryx regularly possesses, and the slide has never met the "real" person?
How would you run this if you were the GM?

2021.09.25 14:05 Axel_22_ Can you dock a suborbital spacecraft with an orbiting one?
I know it would be difficult, but what would the physics engine do? I’ve come up with 2 possible outcomes: 1. Orbital craft follows the Suborbital craft’s trajectory and crashes 2. Suborbital craft follows orbital craft’s trajectory and orbits Maybe something to do with craft mass or part count? If you could help me out, I’d appreciate it.
